This is a good question.

If you haven't fished before, I would recommend a spin-cast rod and reel with a hook, bobber and sinker tipped with a crawler which is a low cost way to get started.

Also you can rig it with a plastic lure like a worm or a zoom fluke, which some of the best lures to start with. Use a 2/0 or 3/0 worm hook for a 4 or 5 inch lure. In clear water use natural colors, if in stained or muddy water use darker colors like purple or black.

If you have some experience fishing, try a 6 foot spinner rod and reel combo, using the same type of lure and hook with 8 to 10 lb test fishing line.

When I started out bass fishing, this is how I started out and 15 years later, I still have a couple of spinner-bait rods on the deck of my boat.

The best time to fish of course would be the pre-spawn, when the water temps are between 55 and 60 degrees. Bass will feed heavily just before spawning which takes place between 65 and 75 degrees. One thing to know about water temp is the colder it is, the slower you should work the lure.

But to be honest with you, there is never a bad time to go fishing. Get out there and start today or tomorrow depending when you read this.
