Fish eat worms, everyone knows that. Just ask any kid. And it's true, fish eat worms. Even salt water fish will eat earthworms, and there are plenty of salt water species of worms suitable for bait, including blood worms and clam worms. Bait shops and tackle shops often stock different types of worms, and there are even plastic worms available for fishing.

Amazingly, you can even put a worm in front of a fish that has never seen one, for example in some high altitude ponds where there are no native worms at all, and those fish will gobble them up. And if you think worms are for small fish, I have caught 25 pound striped bass on worms. For bigger fish I often will place several worms on a hook, threading them through the head and letting the body trail naturally behind.

There are many reasons fish love worms and worms make great bait, including the "pretzel theory" I first heard from my friend Large John. As the theory explains, it doesn't matter how full you may be, if someone puts a bowl of pretzels or other small food like nuts in front of you, you will eventually eat one or more subconsciously. Similarly, a fish with no desire to eat might eat a worm if it happens to end up in front of it. This theory certainly makes sense, and I've had worms work when nothing else would catch fish.

I also believe that worms naturally like the smell and taste of worms. Have you ever smelled something that simply turned on your taste buds? For me, bacon cooking in the morning qualifies. I would love the smell of bacon (I think) even if I had never smelled it before. There are other similar foods as well. For many fish, the lowly worm is the equivalent. It just smells and tastes naturally good. Now I've never eaten one myself, but many worms, for example earthworms, are safe for human consumption. My nephew actually made earthworm cookies as a school project!

So, if you want to catch fish, forget high tech gear, lures, flies, and more, as much fun as they may be. Just toss out a worm, especially f fishing for your supper, and you'll have a decent chance of success. Worms are widely available. You can dig them yourself, find them under rocks and logs, sometimes find them crawling around on the surface, or simply buy them anywhere bait is available.
